Essential Oils & Autoimmune Disease

Run your hand along a fresh herb and you can instantly smell its aroma.

Did you know what you’re smelling is the plant’s essential oils?

While they may feel like a bit of a mystery to many of us, they are all around us.

In the petals of flowers like lavender and rose.

In the rind of our citrus fruits like lemons, limes and oranges.

And in the leaves of our culinary herbs.

They’re in roots like ginger.

And in the bark of many trees too like cedarwood.

Essential oils are all around you.

You’re also consuming them through flavorings in everyday products like your average toothpaste.

We know that pure, therapeutic grade essential oils offer medicinal benefits too.

After all they’re 50-70% more concentrated than their herbal counterparts.

If you’ve ever been told to have a cup of peppermint to settle your stomach… 1 drop of peppermint essential oil is the equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea. That’s why they can work so quickly and effectively in the body.

But let’s talk about essential oils in the context of autoimmune disease.

I know 3 things to be true on this topic.

  1. Autoimmune disease is caused more by diet and lifestyle factors more than it is genetics.
  2. Autoimmune disease can leave you with a lot of symptoms to manage and we want more options to address them than another medication.
    • Fatigue
    • Brain fog
    • Headaches
    • Digestive issues
    • Chronic aches & pain
    • Anxiety and depression
  1. Pure, therapeutic grade essential oils can help to address many of these symptoms as it supports our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

That is why I personally chose to include essential oils into my plan for managing multiple sclerosis.

For me it’s helped to manage

  • Brain fog
  • Heat sensitivity
  • Neck and head tension
  • Aches and pain

It’s also helped me to eliminate the toxins in my environment – another contributing factor to autoimmune disease.

Will they cure autoimmune disease?

No.

There is no cure for autoimmune disease – not even diet.

However, what they can do is support your body on a cellular level to create a healing environment that can eliminate symptoms and help you achieve homeostasis in your body – that place of relaxation through your parasympathetic nervous system.
