Migraine + Yoga

Thanks to discovering and eliminating my triggers, the migraines weren’t as fierce or frequent. Food became my medicine. I knew if I went back to a free-for-all eating, I was sure to be back in migraine misery.

But as I got older, the stakes got higher as I entered college (i.e. all work and all play – NO rest!). And let me tell you how motivated I was in college to keep the migraines at bay. There’s zero chance of finding a quiet place to sleep in a college dorm and an even lesser chance of finding a clean toilet to puke in.

I needed more armor against the severity of migraines.

That’s when I started to hear the same advice over and over again … “You should try yoga. I hear it really helps with migraines.”

Despite their good intentions, I was certain that such a suggestion meant that they knew absolutely nothing about migraines. I mean did these trendy yogis really think that some pretzel posture was going to do anything for pain so bad it felt like you had constant brain freeze and the flu for two or three days straight?

Yet something inside of me made me wonder – who was really in the dark here? Were they naïve to migraines or was I naïve to yoga? After all something that has been around for 5,000 years has to have some merit it to it, right?

I decided it was time to roll out a yoga mat and decide for myself.
